Domenico Ghirlandaio (2 June 1448 – 11 January 1494) was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Florence. Ghirlandaio was part of the so-called "third generation" of the Florentine Renaissance, along with Verrocchio, the Pollaiolo brothers and Sandro Botticelli. Ghirlandaio led a large and efficient workshop that included his brothers Davide Ghirlandaio and Benedetto Ghirlandaio, his brother-in-law Bastiano Mainardi from San Gimignano, and later his son Ridolfo Ghirlandaio. Many apprentices passed through Ghirlandaio's workshop, including the famous Michelangelo. Ghirlandaio's particular talent lay in his ability to posit depictions of contemporary life and portraits of contemporary people within the context of religious narratives, bringing him great popularity and many large commissions. The Seventy Apostles or Seventy-two Apostles are those whom the Lord chose, in addition to the original Twelve Apostles, to go before Him into the cities He would visit , and lay down the groundwork and infrastructure for the Early Church, as mentioned in the Gospel of Luke. According to Luke, the only gospel in which they appear, Jesus appointed them and sent them out in pairs on a specific mission which is detailed in the text.

Jacques Joseph Tissot (15 October 1836 – 8 August 1902), Anglicized as James Tissot, was a French painter and illustrator. He was a successful painter of Paris society before moving to London in 1871. He became famous as a genre painter of fashionably dressed women shown in various scenes of everyday life. He also painted scenes and characters from the Bible. More on James Tissot

Jesus may have chosen the number for symbolic reasons, just as the Twelve Apostles are equal to the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

There are the 70 elders of Israel, the 70 members of the Sanhedrin, the 70 nations believed to be in the world, or 72 according to the Greek Septuagint translation.

"After this the Lord sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. When you enter a house, first say, "Peace to this house." If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.'" (Luke 10:1-8)

Perhaps these teams are to seek out receptive towns where they know Jesus' message will be received, so later Jesus can visit those and not waste his time with those that reject his message. These Seventy disciples have an awesome responsibility, "He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me"

The feast day commemorating the seventy is known as the "Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles" in Eastern Orthodoxy. Each of the seventy apostles also has individual commemorations scattered throughout the liturgical year.

The canonical sequel to the Gospel of Luke portrays the dispersal as occurring a substantial time after the ascension, with the ministry staying in Jerusalem at first and spreading from there beginning with the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch. More on the 70 disciples
