Lluís Dalmau was a Spanish 15th-century painter who flourished between 1431 and 1460. He lived in the court of Aragón. He worked for the court, and King Alfonso the Magnanimous sent him on a mission to Bruges (1431-1436). This important city in the Low Countries was where painter Jan van Eyck worked. Dalmau was frequently at his workshop and learned from his works. Lluís was the painter who introduced the Flemish style to Spain. His work mostly clearly painted in this style is the famous alterpiece of the Virgen dels Consellers (1445), commissioned by the Consell de Cent. The piece depicts a gallery of angel musicians practically identical to the angels in the polyptych of Ghent by Van Eyck.

Though most of his work has been lost, the few paintings that survive are of great significance. More on Lluís Dalmau

Saint Baudilus is venerated as a martyr by the Catholic Church. His cult is closely associated with the city of Nîmes and Spain. The Catholic Encyclopedia writes that "the true apostle of Nîmes was St. Baudilus,. Tradition also makes him a martyr during the reign of Julian the Apostate.

Julian the Apostate

Saint Baudilus was a Christian, possibly a deacon, who came into the city one day during a festival celebrated by the Salii or Agonales in honor of Veiovis. The festival was being celebrated in hills near the city, formerly covered with oaks, but now occupied by vineyards. A crowd was grouped on the hillsides, watching the ceremony which involved animal sacrifice.

Baudilus condemned this ceremony and toppled a statue of the God. Furious at this insult, the Pagan priests whipped and then executed Baudilus by decapitating him with an ax. According to the legend, his severed head bounced three times on the ground, each impact bringing forth a spring of water.Upon these springs of water was later built an oratory: l'oratoire des Trois-Fontaines.

Ferdinand Pertus
Martyrdom of Saint Baudile

Pertus Ferdinand, born in Capestang in 1883 , died in Marguerittes in 1948, was a  French painter and illustrator.

The son of a banker, who demanded that his son have a solid education. Thus, in addition to his artistic activity, Ferdinand Pertus studied law and became a notary in Marguerittes.  In the 1920s he resumed his passion of painting.

Hubert Rouger, mayor of Nîmes from 1925 to 1940, particularly appreciated the works of Pertus. He asked him for a series of paintings, treated in illuminations, which would retrace the history of the people of Nîmes. The idea was to decorate the wedding hall of the Hôtel de Ville. Pertus turned into a historian, searched the archives, found the old Nîmes streets of each era, reconstructed the events, the costumes ... Finally, he created this series of works which, even today, strike with their truth. More on Pertus Ferdinand

Baudilus’ body was collected by his wife and then was transported to a place called "Valsainte", where he was buried by a pre-existing colony of Christians. Valsainte became a place of pilgrimage. A church was built there in the fourth century and a monastery in 511 AD, which survived until the 17th century. The crypt of Saint Baudilus marks the alleged spot where Baudilus was martyred.
